Juja Sub-County Public Health officer Flora Gakui has raised concerns over the lack of designated smoking zones in Juja town.
Gakui said that the smokers have no specific place for smoking and they are exposing the public to smoke by lighting cigarettes at any point in the town.
Speaking on Sunday when she led Juja MP in identifying the sewerage systems that need renovation, Gakui said that there was need to set aside smoking zones in Juja to reduce the incidence of passive smoking by a majority of residents who are non-smokers.
She added that during the rains the faulty sewerage system in some areas spill raw sewage into homesteads and streets saying that a permanent solution needed to be found to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases.
Area MP, Francis Munyua, has said that smoking was a threat to the health of the Juja residents adding that he would work closely with the public health officer to ensure the area has smoking zones.
He further said that the sewerage system would be repaired before the rainy season to ensure there are no threats towards the health of the public.
In June, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo launched a Sh10 million water project to be managed by the Gatundu South Water and Sewerage Company. The project is part of county government’s plan to improve water and sanitation coverage from the current 35 percent.
