Nyamira County chief health officer Dr Douglas Bosire has warned Nyamira Hospital management and other public hospitals in the county against smuggling drugs supplied by the county government.
This comes amidst claims that many hospitals in the region were experiencing medicine shortages despite the county investing billions in the health sector.
Nyamira Hospital had been in the public limelight following revelations that a number of senior workers from the county hospital were smuggling drugs for their own benefit.
However, on Tuesday, Bosire warned the management against smuggling drugs meant for the public, and summoned top officials to his office to answer the claims.
“I want to reiterate that the drugs are meant for the public and whoever violates that must face the law fully. Those engaging in the smuggling business must understand that the drugs are purchased out of the taxpayer’s money and the sweat of the public must be respected,” Bosire said.
He said the ministry of health will carry out an audit following complaints that were filed in his office accusing the Nyamira Level four management of practicing the crime without respecting the law.
“I have already summoned the top management of Nyamira Hospital and i know they will honour the summons. Public resources must be respected and that is what the county ought to do. We will carry out an audit to verify the claims from a section of the public,” he added.
Efforts to reach Director of Medical services Dr Edwin Ombuna were futile.
