The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority vice chairperson Jedidah Ntoyai has urged the public to assist the authority in making the police service transparent and accountable.
Speaking on Tuesday during a workshop to educate the public on IPOA’s mandate, Ntoyai blamed the public for colluding with the police by giving them bribes thus making the service corrupt.
“The police are employed to offer their services free of charge since they are entitled to pay according to the constitution. According to section 244 of the constitution, the police are supposed to do their work professionally, transparently and I urge Kenyans to help us in making the service a corruption free zone,” she said.
IPOA has launched a strategic plan aimed at improving its services to wananchi and making the police service better which include ensuring that the officers observer human rights, ensuring that detention facilities and cells are in good condition ans well as restoring public confidence in the police force.
Others include ensuring that the internal affairs units of the police are functioning.
“I urge wananchi to always be attending our seminars where they will tell us their complaints and it will also help us in improving our services and making the police service an admirable profession which abides by the law,” she added.
