A six month old girl on Thursday perished in a fire tragedy at Nyagweko Sub-location in Nyamira North District, Nyamira County.

Confirming the incident, area assistant chief Andrew Nyamanga said the infant’s mother had responded to the call of nature when the house caught fire and reduced it to ashes.

Nyamanga said the cause of the fire has not been established, but noted that investigations, conducted by the police, are ongoing, to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“The child’s mother had responded to the call of nature on Thursday morning at around 10 am when the house caught fire killing the infant. However, the cause of the fire outbreak has not been established yet,” he said.

The neighbours hastily speculated the cause of the tragedy to have been caused by a lantern.

“We are mourning the death of the toddler who was too young to die. We suspect the cause of the fire to be related with the lantern. This is not the first time we are having such experience in our area. Two months ago, another house caught fire with the cause being the lantern. Fortunately, nobody was caught in that tragedy,” a neighbour said.
