Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir wants government to introduce performance appraisals and job reviews for teachers in the country.

Shabir said it was important to pay teachers according to their job specifications.

He said there was need for equity on how Kenyan workers are being paid for the work they are doing based on their qualifications.

“The issue of job evaluation among teachers is overdue, it should be done to rein in some discipline among teachers,” he said.

Shabir said President Uhuru Kenyatta raised the issue during his public address and the matter must be taken into consideration.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Wednesday, Shabir called on the government and teachers' unions to embrace mediation over the pay dispute.

The MP said the mediation should address how the pay increment can be implemented.

He said parliament was ready to broker the deal so that no party can feel shortchanged in the implementation process.

“Parliament can mediate over this issue. Even if it means signing some agreement with the warring parties, we will do it so that this matter is resolved amicably,” he said.

Shabir said politics will not address the impasse at a time children are at home without education and called for sobriety among the leaders.
