The national government has been urged to stop sidelining county governments in matters pertaining to security.

Speaking at the Uasin Gishu County Assembly premises on Thursday, the leader of majority in the assembly Mr Josphat Lowoi said the county governments have knowledge of what is happening on the ground and, therefore, easy to convey information pertaining to security.

“The national government should have a direct link with local leaders such as governors, chiefs and village elders,” Mr Lowoi said.

He said the national government should involve politicians in fighting insecurity in the country adding that the security docket should be devolved to the county levels.

“Although the government has shown the door to top security personnel like the Inspector General and Cabinet Secretary for internal security and replaced them with competent ones, it should also focus on junior staff who are sleeping on their jobs,” he said.

He urged the locals to always stay vigilant, embrace the Nyumba Kumi initiative and report any cases of insecurity to the nearest police station.

Uasin Gishu County Assembly speaker Isaac Terer urged the national government to improve on its intelligence gathering and involve the county governments in fighting insecurity in the country.
