The Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board chair Linah Jebii Kilimo has urged the national and county governments to protect girls against harmful cultural practices.

Jebii noted that practices such as the FGM were denying girls their rights as enshrined in the constitution.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Monday, Jebii blamed the lack of proper education saying it has perpetuated the practice.

"It is the duty of both the county and national governments to protect its people from harmful cultural practices such as FGM which leads to over bleeding and complications during child birth. Some girls are even forced to quit school as they are married off by their parents in exchange of dowry thus denying them the right to education," said she.

However, the former MP noted that FGM prevalence has reduced by 70 per cent and that she is working hard to ensure that the practice becomes a thing of the past.

"I appeal to communities who still practice FGM to shun it or else they will be arrested and charged in court. Instead, the communities should adopt alternative methods of rites of passage," she added.
