Juja MP Francis Munyua Waitutu has asked the government to review the laws on illicit brewing and sale of illegal alcohol in order to stamp out the menace.

Speaking to journalists at Juja Town on Monday, Munyua said that the lenient laws are giving brewers the confidence of brewing since they know that they will be fined and released.

He said that illegal brewing has become a serious issue and that the government must act urgently.

He said that the increased number of deaths occurring as result of illicit brewing and illegal alcohol is of concern.

“The government should review the law in relation to brewing in a bid to curb the menace that continues to consume many lives,” he said.

The Juja MP also faulted some police officers whom he accused of colluding with brewers.

He said that illicit brewing will remain a problem unless the government devises appropriate measures to deal with it.

He said that high poverty level and unemployment has also led to rise in brewing.

“Unless the government comes up with programmes that will help alleviate poverty and unemployment, brewing and consumption of illegal alcohol will remain an issue,” he said.

The MP however said that he will support the government in the fight against illegal brewing.

He urged Juja youths to shun illicit brews and instead engage in development activities.
