Parents of deaf children in Juja have asked the county government of Kiambu to build a special school for children with hearing impairments to enable them fit in the society.
The chairman of the group, Mr. Frankline Nthiga on Tuesday said that they wrote a proposal to the Member of County Assembly of Juja ward Mr. Samuel Kitata, the Area Education Officer Edwin Kiambi and the county government in 2013 seeking help in building a nearby school for their children but have never gotten a response.
Mr. Benson Marangu of the District Education Assessment and Resource Centre based in Thika said that most of the parents cannot afford the hearing aid equipment urging the county government to also support the parents in securing the aids.
“The hearing aids are a bit expensive and most of the parents cannot afford which then poses a great challenge to their children,” Mr. Marangu said.
Mr. Marangu who is also the patron of the group has urged the county government to purchase a diagnostic audiometer to enable them test the hearing levels of the affected children to ensure they refer them to the right schools.
