The number of deaths from the Thursday Juja Weighbridge accident on Thika Road has risen to 12.
Thika traffic police Base Commander Ms Apelles Chacha said seven of the casualties who were in critical condition died last night bringing the fatalities to 12.
The accident, which involved a Kenya Mpya service bus and a lorry transporting sand left over 20 people nursing injuries in different hospitals in the area.
Police have since yesterday been cracking down on rogue drivers and un-roadworthy vehicles in the area and along the Thika superhighway. Police working in partnership with NTSA have impounded vehicles and arrested several drivers.
Most of the vehicles impounded according to the commander are those without digital speed governors and those whose speed governors have been tampered with.
“The vehicles impounded are either those without governors while others have tampered with them,” he said.
Thika level five hospital chief nursing officer Rosemary Mwangi has said that some of the victims are still in bad condition.
