Kabete residents on Wednesday held demonstrations over the alleged killing of a youth suspected of robbery by police from Kabete police station.
The man is said to have been shot by police at around 4am on Wednesday morning with area residents saying that he was a second-hand clothes vendor headed for Gikomba market.
Martin Njue who used to work with the deceased said they usually wake up early to go to the market to purchase their day's stock.
"This time I sent him to collect clothes for me only to wake up and hear of his death," he said.
He added that robbery in the area has been a great on the increase but claimed that innocent youths might have been killed by police officers in their fight against the vice.
Richard Maina says the death of his brother is a total shock to the family and a mistake by the police saying his brother was a hardworking businessman in the market.
‘’We are very saddened by his death and we are demanding for justice. Police should conduct their activity with vigilance and not go killing innocent youths in the name of beefing up security,’’ said Maina, the man's brother.
However, according to Kikuyu police boss Mutune Maweu, police recovered a pistol and two bullets from the a bag that he had on his back. Maweu said the deceased was in the company of four young men who were escaping a police patrol car.
He said that in the incident the young man was the only one shot dead adding that the man was with a gang of robbers.
"We are doing our work accordingly. Residents are easily fooled by these people as they live in the society looking innocent but people don't know what they conduct during the night,’’ he said.
