Tea farmers in Kamwangi, Gatundu North have been asked to embrace a saving culture so as to cushion themselves from harsh economic times in future.
Speaking to tea farmers in Kamwangi on Monday, Kamwangi tea area zonal director Mukora Kimani urged farmers to develop a habit of saving a little from their tea earnings.
"With the deterioration of the shilling against the dollar, farmers and everybody else ought to brace themselves for harsh economic times since a lot things are likely to become costly. We therefore need to have some savings that will last us for the time being," said Mwangi.
Mukora noted that many farmers were servicing Sacco and bank loans which put them in an awkward position economically.
"When you spend more than you earn, it means that you will always be operating in debts. A saving and investment culture must be embraced by all farmers to make their lives better," he added.
The farmers were also advised to complement their tea farming business with other income generating activities like dairy farming to avoid over-reliance of tea that is usually affected by global tea prices.
