With schools closing for the August holidays, parents have been advised to keep their children busy to prevent them from mischief.

According to the County Children Representative Nancy Jerono, many students were likely to be subjected to bad behaviour without their parent’s knowledge.

Speaking on Tuesday at the county headquarters children’s departments’ office, Jerono asked parents to formulate programmes that would keep the youngsters busy to avoid instances of waywardness.

“Schools play a very important role in ensuring that these children remain busy all through. We all know how idleness is dangerous to our children especially adolescents who are out to experiment everything,” she said.

“It’s now upon parents to ensure that their children remain safe and busy with pro-academic activities throughout the holidays,” added Jerono.

The social worker further discouraged parents against forcing their children to attend privately organised tutorials yet they do not know what goes on during such classes.

“We all know that the government banned holiday tuition but some teachers privately hire academies and churches to teach students. What many parents don’t know is that only 80 per cent of their children attend such classes, what happens in between there is sad,” she offered.

She said holidays are part of the academic calendar where students get a month off school to be with their parents and engage in others activities out of school.

Jerono promised to liaise with the Youths and Sports department so as to come up with more family based activities at different grounds to help offer alternative social activities during the holidays.
