Kenya Power consumers have been warned not to fall prey to conmen who are out to swindle them millions of shillings in power connection fee.

Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) Secretary General, Stephen Mutoro said many consumers have been conned adding Kenya Power has been unable to deal with the menace.

Mutoro said eliminating those conmen is not a function of Kenya Power but asked the consumers to be very vigilant to help fight it.

He told the consumers to make a visit to Kenya Power offices whenever they have issues related to the company and desist from taking calls from strangers.

“Why should consumers talk to strangers who eventually rob them. This is a good forum to tell you not to receive strange calls and act on the instructions,” he said.

Speaking in Kisumu during a Kenya Power/Cofek forum with consumers in Kisumu County on Friday, Mutoro said consumers should also be alert to help curb vandalism of transformers.

He said vandalism is perpetrated by people living amidst the consumers adding they should be ready to report immediately they detect them.

Mutoro said vandalism has led to constant power blackouts and outages in the region thus exposing consumers to criminals and damage to property and businesses.

“Let us not sit back and watch as transformers are being vandalised. It is our responsibility because it is the consumers who will be affected,” he said.
