A group of women in Kiambaa have today raised an alarm over the increased number of sex workers in the region weeks after farmers reaped big from their green house projects. This is because the sex workers see it as an opportunity to reap easy cash from the farmers.
Speaking during a Women meeting today at Kiambaa Evangelistic Church, the chairlady of Kiambaa Muungano Women Self Help Group, Grace Gathoni said that in the past, the presence of sex workers after a bumper harvest had affected them as their husbands were easily lured by them. She added that the sex workers are not from the area but that they are always alert during harvests.
Gathoni also revealed that most women in the region play a major role in farming but when money comes, their husbands end up using the money wastefully denying the women the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
She affirmed that the women in the area were ready to stay up all night to ensure that the sex workers were driven away and that any man seen with them would be dealt with accordingly.
"We are also calling on the police to help us by arresting the sex workers who are also thieves. We know they are here for this period of harvest yet they have no idea what we go through to get such harvests," said Gathoni.
Speaking after the meeting, a member of the group Elizabeth Waithera said that she had been a victim of the menace by the sex workers last year. She revealed that her husband was drugged in a lodging in the area and Kshs 85,000 was stolen from him.
