The Kiambu Sub-County children’s office is planning to conduct a workshop for the area chiefs and administration police officers to train them on how to deal with matters pertaining children.

According the Kiambu Sub-County children’s officer, Jane Kabiru, children are very delicate to deal with and they thus must be dealt with in a manner that will not destabilise them but make them perceive those who handle them positively.

Speaking in her office on Friday, the children officer said the training will involve various professional experts who will take the officers through theory and practical sessions to ensure they are adequately equipped to handle children issues whenever they are brought before them.

“I am optimistic that after the exercise, officers form the two departments will be better placed to judiciously execute their mandate all for the best interest of the child,” said Kabiru.

She said children have complained of being harassed or abused especially when they have been suspected of contravening the law and are never given a chance to explain circumstances that plunge them into breaking the law.

“It is against this backdrop that the children office has seen the need to organise for training for those who handle children matters to sensitise them on how they can amicably settle issues that involve children before they even reach the children’s office,” said Kabiru.

The officer pointed out that the administrative police and chiefs need to be trained on child-friendly tactics that they can use to extract information from children without destabilising them in any way.

“They can make the best children councillors if empowered correctly concerning the same,” she said.
