Thika based macadamia nuts company, Jungle Nuts limited has announced it's farmers will receive a Sh350 million bonus which is more than double of what the farmers received last year.
Making the announcement on Monday in his office, Jungle Nuts Managing Director Patrick Kimani said macadamia farming has become commercially viable and encouraged more farmers to venture in the farming.
Kimani said they have adopted an electronic buying system to enable the company to deal with the farmers directly, in a bid to weed out unscrupulous middlemen who have been exploiting the farmers.
"We have thousands of farmers now growing macadamia nuts because it is paying well as we have eliminated all the middlemen," he said.
Kimani also said the company had started to initiate farmers in organic farming.
"We want farmers not only to grow macadamia organically, but to also extend it to other crops," he said.
The company also intends to start a Sacco to help farmers improve lives through soft loans.
"The main aim of this Sacco is to enable farmers meet their needs like paying school fees and buying farm inputs as they await their payments," added Kimani.
