Kiambu County Assembly Speaker Gathii Irungu has urged the national government to recognise and reward Mau Mau fighters who fought for the country’s freedom.

Mr Irungu said that there are Mau Mau fighters who fought for the country’s independence and have never been recognised.

Speaking during the Mashujaa day celebrations in Ndumberi on Tuesday, the Kiambu Assembly speaker said that the national government must recognise people who risked their lives for the freedom of the country.

“It is unfortunate that the government is taking years to recognise and appreciate the effort of freedom fighters, some of whom have died without tasting the fruits of independence,” said Irungu.

The speaker said that there is need for the government to set in place proper measures that will aid in recognising heroes and heroines.

Irungu also urged county governments to recognise people who serve the community diligently and reward them accordingly.

Kiambu County Deputy Governor, Gerald Githinji, who spoke at the celebrations, said the county government will soon launch a Governor’s Award to award heroes and heroines.
