It is a relief for the Railway’s Project Affected Persons at Kianda village in Kibera after the committee in charge of the relocation began issuing them with rooms.
At least 250 residents were on Wednesday issued with keys as they prepare to get into the new houses which were constructed by the Kenya Railways Corporation in collaboration with the World Bank.
Cliff Owino, secretary of the committee representing the affected persons confirmed that the Kianda residents can now occupy the new structures which are meant to relocate those who had been occupying houses next to the railway line.
“Finally we can confirm that the houses are ready for the beneficiaries who have waited for a very long time. We had to wait for this long to allow for the completion of the houses as per the conditions stipulated in the Relocation Action Plan,” said Owino in an interview with this reporter.
He confirmed that at least 500 residents are set to be relocated by next week, with each house costing Sh3,000 per month as rent for the next six months.
“We are now issuing the keys with each house attracting a monthly rent of Sh3,000 for the first six months after which they will not be required to pay any amount as house rent,” he said.
“We want to hit a target of 500 residents who shall have been relocated by the end of next week,” he affirmed.
