Many churches in Kibera do not only preach the gospel, they have also invested in projects aimed at uplifting the welfare of their faithful.
Some churches have started schools where they offer education to the public and other services.
For instance, the Lutheran Church of Kibera has ventured into agriculture to benefit its congregation and the neighbours at large.
Situated at Karanja, the church practices agriculture where it plants arrow roots and sells them to residents.
According to Allois Ombati the care taker, the arrow roots serve as breakfast for majority of residents in the area.
He said they have a ready market as the arrow roots are on high demand.
“Our arrow roots have a ready market where the congregation buys them on Sunday while the public buys them during weekdays,’’ said Ombati on Tuesday.
He, however, thinks the arrow roots grow well because of the location of the farm.
“Arrow roots need a lot of water and we are privileged to live near a water stream whose water irrigates the arrow roots. We sell them at an affordable price starting from Sh50,” added the care taker.
He also urged other churches to engage in activities that will help the public such as creating jobs for unemployed youths in their neighbourhood.
