Youth unemployment is a thorn in the flesh for any government in the world.
To address jobless among the youth, the Jubilee coalition put in its manifesto strategies to create employment for youths all over the country.
The idea was put into action when the Ministry of Devolution in collaboration with the National Youth Service started a slum upgrade programme in Kibera.
The exercise created jobs for Kibera youths and could help them earn income and better their living standards.
Michael Kaloki hails from Machakos and has lived in Kibera for a decade now.
He was among the youths who were selected to work with the NYS after looking for employment with no luck.
“I was desperately looking for employment and so I decided to join the NYS when they started their work in Kibera. I was happy since at least I could earn some wages and hence improve my living standards. With the money I was paid, I bought furniture for my house,” said Kaloki on Monday.
Phemina Juma said she wants the NYS case settled so that they can resume duty in Kibera.
She also said she was benefiting from the project since she could send a little cash to support her child who lives with her parents upcountry.
