With the rising population growth in Kenya, most urban residents are finding it hard getting decent housing.

This has resulted in the mushrooming of informal settlements where sanitation and services are wanting.

Being the largest slum in Africa, Kibera has recorded too has experienced its fair share of the rising populace.

The increased population has made landlords in the slum to try and accommodate as many residents as they can.

According to Rita Wandera, a resident at Makina, the landlords have devised another way of earning an extra coin by building “storeyed houses” from iron sheets.

“This endangers the lives of tenants because the house could not be strong enough to sustain another building on it. I am afraid because this type of housing can lead to loss of life,’’ said Wandera on Thursday.

“The iron sheet structures are always erected on already built houses. These structures are now used as houses by the new tenants. Here, houses are cheap and therefore it is always loved by people who want to pay cheap rent,’’ she added.

In Kibera house rent is as cheap as Sh1, 500. However, Wandera advises tenants to be keen when looking for rental houses.
