Kibera residents have a reason to smile after Kenya Power continues to spread its services in the city through urban and rural electrification projects to informal settlements.
The project aims to connect 10,000 households in Kibera slums.
Kenya Power will connect slum dwellers to the national grid at a subsidised rate of Sh1,760 for domestic use and Sh2,740 for commercial use down from Sh35,000 paid for regular connections.
The slum electrification has been initiated in Nairobi’s Kibera slums. It would improve the lives of residents of the informal settlements.
Electric metering will be based on the pre-paid tariff so that they can pay on a day-to-day basis. One could spend as little as Ksh100. The project intends to reduce slum-dwellers’ dependence on kerosene and illegal connection of electricity.
The large number of transformers being installed in the slums under the project will take care of future increases in demand for electricity in the slums.
The project uses permanent concrete poles instead of wooden ones whose life span is less durable and special insulated wires which are more safety for the area.
