Kibera and its environs suffered a major blackout on Thursday evening after lights were shut off from 3 pm till the next day.
The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) had explained that there would be a blackout but they never said it would be that serious. According to Citizen Digital, KPLC termed the cause of the blackout as a hitch at the Juja station which is where the headquarters of their offices are based.
In Kibera, the situation was a mess. The blackout brought fear and panic to the residents. It also brought losses to business people who could not operate without electricity.
Speaking on Friday, Haman Adan, who is a businessman in the area said that he lost his income since he was charging around twenty mobile phones and five torches for his customers at the same time when the lights went off.
''My customers came and picked their phones, I have lost more that two hundred shillings,'' said Adnan.
Other businesses which could not go on without lights were the milk ATM machine, which most Kibera residents rely on for milk, the video and cyber cafes.
A fish seller in the area, Beatrice Adhiambo, also did not make any profit as many people did not buy fish. The reason was people do not like to walk on the dark in Kibera, antyhing can happen.
The power blackouts have now become rampant across the country, KPLC needs to be careful in the way they operate so that this can never happen again.
