Kikuyu Council of Elders wants the National Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) disbanded for allegedly failing to tame illicit brews.

Speaking at a cultural forum in Kikuyu Town on Sunday, the elders raised concerns over the rising number of deaths caused by illegal alcohol.

The elders claimed that failure by Nacada to curb illegal sale of alcohol has caused many families pain and agony.

Washington Waiganjo, the elders spokesperson, called for Nacada’s disbandment and asked the government to form a competent agency that will fight illegal brewing.

He claimed that the anti-drugs agency has been unable to stop illicit brewing.

“It is unfortunate that we continue to lose people through killer alcohol when we have an agency that is supposed to fight the same,” he said.

The Kikuyu elders asked Nacada chairman John Mututho to intensify the fight against illegal alcohol. They claimed that as the chair of the agency, Mututho has not shown commitment in fighting brews.

The Kikuyu elders urged the government to set up a special police team that will specifically deal with illegal brewing.

Meanwhile, Kiambu County anti-drugs campaigner Gladys Chania has faulted Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu for leading youths in demolishing bar premises.

Chania said that Waititu is not justified in leading demolition and destruction of property and that the fight against brewing should follow the laid down regulations.

“No one has a right or is allowed to destroy property in the name of flushing out rogue bar operators,” she said.

Waititu led hundreds of youths in demolishing bar premises on Saturday, a move that resulted to looting of alcoholic drinks by some youth.
