Police in Kikuyu on Monday gunned down a robber while his accomplice escaped with gunshot wounds after they tried to rob a supermarket 300 metres from the Kikuyu Police Station.
Kikuyu OCPD Mr Mutune Maweu said that at around 1:30 pm, an alarm from the supermarket went off prompting police to respond.
He said that police and the robbers engaged in an exchange of fire for a while inside the supermarket. The robbers didn't surrender after police ordered them prompting the fire exchange, he said.
Maweu said police were able to kill one gangster and recovered a pistol from him. His accomplice slipped out through a door at the store of the supermarket and used a boda boda to escape.
The police boss explained that despite the fire exchange no civilian was injured. However, he said that the robber who escaped was shot on the left leg and he escaped with a bag of money that they had already taken before police entered. He said an estimated Sh754,000 was stolen.
"I call on all medical centres and hospitals to report to the police immediately the robber tries to seek medication. Anyone who may see or have knowledge of the suspect’s whereabouts should report to the police," he said.
Maweu said investigations are on going to arrest the suspect. Ms Anna Wanjiru, one of the cashiers in the supermarket said that the robbers walked in and took some items before coming to the counter to pay.
She said that she was the one attending to them when one of them wearing a leather jacket unzipped it. Wanjiru said she thought he was unzipping the jacket to remove money only for him to remove a pistol. She said they were all ordered to lie down as they stole the money.
