Residents of Kirigiti in Kiambu Sub-County have been urged to construct toilets in a bid to maintain high levels of hygiene and sanitation.
The move is aimed at reducing cases of diseases like cholera which are brought about by unclean environment.
Speaking to journalists at Kirigiti trading centre on Friday, area chief, John Kinya said lack of toilets in the area has made most locals use nearby bushes as their toilets.
“Lack of toilets has made many people in the area to suffer from diseases like diarrhea and cholera,” said Kinya.
The administrator urged the local residents to discard outdated cultural values and adopt modern values which encourage the use of ventilated Pit latrines saying only less than 20 per cent of the area population has access to latrines.
He urged local residents to always participate during the county budget preparation process so that their projects could be allocated funds.
The chief said the funds could be used in setting up community projects including public toilets in major trading centers like Kirigiti.
