The act of Kitutu central ward residents in Kisii County demonstrating to governor's office on Thursday over accusations of failed repair of a bridge at Daraja Mbili has been condemned by government officials.
Speaking to the press in Kisii town on Saturday, chief officer administration Patrick Lumumba condemned the act saying it counters the culture of Abagusii.
He said aggrieved residents should have used proper procedures of airing their grievances instead of venting their anger through carrying of the coffin.
Mr Lumumba revealed the youths were incited by a politician to stage demos against Governor James Ongwae over the bridge. He advised the youths to ignore anybody out to misuse them.
"There is a proper procedure to present a complaint. They should have petitioned through the assembly to governor and not what they did. I ask the youths to desist from being misused by politicians to do heinous acts," he advised.
The residents from Mwamogesa village held demos to Governor James Ongwae’s office, demanding construction of a bridge at Daraja Mbili near Mash Park hotel to avert deaths experienced in the area.
The angry youths carried a coffin bearing the remains of Peter Nyakundi who allegedly drowned into Daraja Mbili river while he was crossing to his residence at Mwamogesa village.
They accused area MCA, Pius Abuki of overlooking and turning a deaf year to their cries, over the bridge they said had claimed eight lives.
They also accused the chief administration officer of hoodwinking them that the bridge was to be constructed after it caused another death early this year, of a pupil at Bosire Academy. The pupil drowned into the river and died when he was leaving school for home.
Ongwae has since promised that the bridge will be ready in two months time but promised to construct a temporary bridge to prevent further fatalities.
