The Kisii University Senate has revoked the degree certificates of two students who allegedly graduated without having passed a number of units they had failed.
This was after the university embarked on a serious exercise of auditing its departments following allegations that it was producing half-baked graduates and poaching students from other universities.
The two, Abel Ongeri and Jackton Odhiambo were summoned by the Senate after the error was discovered contrary to the University’s Act.
On Wednesday, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academic affairs Prof Maurice Amutabi confirmed the incident and cautioned students and staff against engaging in the unscrupulous activity.
“I can confirm that we have revoked the certificates of the two students who had graduated illegally in December 2014 and they will have to retake at least four papers before they graduate again,” he said.
Prof Amutabi said investigations were ongoing to unearth the mystery behind the inclusion of the two in the graduation list before a decisive action is taken.
“We of course know that someone helped to include their names in the graduation list and the investigations are ongoing to bring to book those culpable. The institution will take a stiff action against those found guilty,” he added.
The two former students will have to wait till May 2016 to resume their studies after the senate agreed to give them a one year ban.
