Bodaboda operators in Kisumu have expressed discontent with the recent ban on operations beyond 10pm in the night.

The ban was last week imposed by Kisumu County commissioner,Erastus Ekidor who termed the move a security measure to reduce the rate of criminal activities involving motorcycles operators in the night.

However in an interesting rejoinder, Chris Owala a member of the Community Initiative Action Group Kenya, a human rights organization in area, on Monday said that the move would actually increase the rate of crime within the county.

“The bodaboda business is not the only cause of insecurity, imposing the ban is not a solution,” he said.

Owala said that denying people their source of livelihood had a possibility of driving them to unlawful acts.

The Nyanza Bodaboda Network chairman Nelson Odire said operators in the area facing challenges due to the ban.

Odire said the county commissioner said the ban would last between seven to ten days and they are still waiting for the days to elapse.

“We will hold a meeting on the issues with our officials on Monday,” said Odire.

Milimani Market MCA Edwin Anayo whose ward is within the town center, said more consultations were needed to balance the interests of all the affected people.
