Farmers in Kisumu County have been asked to be on the lookout for counterfeit fertiliser brands that are in supply.
Dorcas Ouma from the county agricultural office said some traders are taking advantage of farmers by supplying them with fertilisers that are not recommended.
"We have learnt that there are some characters out there who are duping farmers into buying substances which they purport to be fertilisers," said Ouma.
He said some farmers across who had used the fake fertilisers had recorded losses as their crops are burnt out.
"The source of this fertiliser is still a mystery to us though investigations are ongoing to determine the culprits behind the traders,”the agricultural officer said.
Ouma while speaking to this writer on Wednesday in Chulaimbo after inspecting agricultural projects said maize farmers were the easily targeted lot due to their high number which easily translates into quick cash.
She called upon all farmers to purchase fertiliser from licensed agrovets and report any individuals who are suspected to be selling the fake commodity.
