The county government of Kisumu has been asked to set up village polytechnics in the rural areas.

West Kisumu MCA Paul Okiri noted that the village polytechnics could help in reducing the crime rates in the rural areas by keeping the uneducated youth engaged.

Speaking at his ward office in Nyahera on Wednesday, Okiri noted that the level of idleness among the youth in rural areas is high and urged the county government to keep the youth engaged.

The MCA noted that most youths in rural areas lack the basic secondary school education as most of them drop out in primary schools.

“It is difficult to address the high rate of unemployment among the youth in rural areas as most of them are not well educated and it is difficult to employ such people,” he noted.

“This is why it is necessary to put up village youth polytechnics where the uneducated youth can be trained on ordinary skilled jobs such as carpentry and masonry among others,” said Okiri.

His sentiments were echoed by his nominated counterpart Lydia Odhiambo who asked the County Executive Committee member for Education, Culture, Sports and Gender Jennipher Kere to allocate funds towards the village polytechnics project.
