Business in Nyamira town was on Monday disrupted after students from the Kenya Medical Training College took to the streets to protest against poor sanitation and shortage of hostels.
According to the students, the hostels are dirty and they fear contracting diseases due to poor sanitation.
They said that their efforts to get the attention of the management to address the matter have not borne fruit.
The students now want the cleaners sacked over what they termed their failure to execute their mandate.
“The most shocking thing is that when you go to our hostels, you can’t believe that it hosts students. The surrounding is very poor and something urgent needs to be done. We will not give up if those responsible for cleaning them are not sent home,” said their leader Peter Moriasi.
Traders were forced to close their businesses as the protesting students looted shops besides demanding that the residents join them in their demonstration.
“It is not our idea that we loot or antagonise businesses but it is fundamental that our plea is heard. The management has to come clear on this and solve it immediately,” he added.
However, the demo ended after bodaboda operators intervened and forced the disgruntled learners back to the college compound.
KMTC management led by Deputy principal Alloys Ondieki promised expeditious action to solve the matter.
