Sunday’s directive by Deputy President William Ruto that termed teachers’ salary increment demands as unacceptable and required them to report back to class has elicited a heated debate among Masaba North teachers.
Speaking on Monday during a prayer meeting in Keroka, the officials warned the government against disobeying the court order and accused the DP of treating teachers as 'second class' citizens.
They urged him to apologise to the entire teachers’ fraternity, and warned of a possible revolution if the Jubilee government failed to implement the court order that awarded teachers between 50-60 percent of salary increase.
“As officials from Masaba, we are very disappointed that the person second in command can treat teachers as second class citizens. It’s incorrect for him to discuss the courts order in political forums and he must know that we understand his concerns about the rising popularity of the KNUT secretary General,” said Secretary General Meshack Ombong’i.
His deputy, James Oteki said the DP was worried of Wilson Sossion’s rising popularity among teachers, and hence was the barrier to the implantation of the court order.
“We all know that DP is a worried man given Sossion comes from his political base. However, we want to advise him to stop misleading the government since as teachers, we are not interested in politics unless he wants us to. Sossion isn’t a politician hence his fame among Kenyans should not worry him at all,” he said.
They vowed to continue with their agitation for implementation of the court order by the government, and urged TSC to desist from threatening school heads.
