The Kenya National Union of Teachers Masaba branch has began constructing a rescue center that will hold children who drop out of the school.

The move will ensure the teachers union supports the education sector in Nyamira County, a Knut official said on Wednesday.

Speaking at Nyakongo High School, Knut assistant Secretary General Mr James Oteki said plans for the construction of the centre were complete.

“The children rescue center is one of our plans as a union and plans are at an advanced stage to establish one at Keroka in Masaba, Oteki said. "We have signed a memorandum with World Vision and that is a clear indication that by September, construction will have started."

Mr Oteki said the union has already  acquired two acres of land in Masaba township adding that the mission of identifying needy children will commence when construction of the centre is completed. He said community members will help identify children who will be enrolled for studies at the centre.

“The big issue here is land and I think we have already settled it," he said. "The union will sit down and identify children who will be admitted to the center by the start of next year and of course the local community must be involved."
