Eldoret Catholic Diocese Bishop Cornelius Korir has joined in questioning the government’s confirmation that it is running out of funds.

Speaking in Eldoret where he attended a meeting aimed at initiating peace talks in the North rift region, Korir cited corruption as a major contributor to loss of funds in government.

According to the bishop, all the loopholes that encourage embezzlement of funds should be identified and closed before it is too late.

“We cannot say there is no money while when you look at what corruption is doing there is a lot of money going to waste. We should close the loopholes and let the fellows who have misused public funds step aside. The only way is for the government to be serious in fighting corruption,” he said.

Korir went further to raise concern that devolution has enabled corruption to be taken to the county level, a factor he says has further contributed to loss of money.

“Corruption has been devolved into counties alongside other services. The government should therefore consider fighting it right from the county level. We cannot continue watching as counties allege to spend millions to procure necessities which should have consumed a little amount,” he added.
