Parents in Kibera have been blamed for failing to take full responsibility of their children thus leading to an increase in cases of insecurity.
Speaking during an interview in his office on Friday, OCPD Kilimani Police Division, Peter Kattam, said most young people turn out to be criminals because they were not well brought up by their parents or guardians.
"The basic policing authority is the family. People who become criminals have relatives but unfortunately the relatives fail to mentor them to be good people in future," said Kattam.
The OCPD also mentioned domestic violence as a contributor to crime among children.
"When parents keep fighting in front of their children or pelting insults at each other, children grow up with aggression because they believe that war is the sure way of life," said Kattam.
The called upon the heads of families to remain vigilant and investigate what their children do in or out of their homes.
"If we want to minimise crime, parents must take an initiative of knowing what their children do and where they get the money or any item they may bring home from. This will help in finding out if the child is involved in any criminal activity," he added.
