Traders at Laini Saba Market in Kibera are up in arms over the poor state of the market.

They said the conditions are not favourable and are afraid they might contract diseases.

They said they have raised several complaints to the area municipality but no action has been taken to address their plight.

They said the officials from the municipality are only keen at collecting taxes.

They now want the municipality to come to their aid and hire more cleaners to tidy up the market and also dig trenches to ensure free flow of rain water to avoid floods.

“We have no place to move to only that we accept the situation even though it is risky and conduct our business,” said Rosemary Mutua on behalf of the traders.

Mutua who sells fruits said they fear losing more customers if the situation is not urgently addressed.

“Customers get scared that they may contract diseases such as cholera when buying goods especially fruits because the environment is dirty and muddy more so during this rainy season and yet we pay taxes daily,” said the trader on Monday.

The traders have urged the area municipality to improve conditions at the market for a better business environment.
