Butchers at Makairo and Sironga trading centres in Nyamira South Sub county are counting loses after health officers failed to turn for inspection on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

According to butchery owners, no health officer visited the area to inspect their meat for safe sales to the public, leading to losses amounting to thousands of shillings.

Ken Mokua claimed that in normal days he buys 200 kgs of meat, which he lost, considering the fact that he has no fridge to help him in preservation.

Another butcher, Patick Orutu, said he is counting losses of two goats, which he did not sell due to lack of health officers.

“It is a serious loss on our part as businessmen. The blame squarely falls on the meat inspectorate office which has failed to attend to us and we ask for compensation,” said Orutu

They called upon the officers to make sure that they come on time to ensure that they don’t incur such losses.

The traders further added that they have already reported to meat inspectorate office in Nyamira, and they have been assured that the inspection will take place as usual starting today, Tuesday.
