Machakos governor Alfred Mutua on Tuesday commissioned construction of 600 housing units for Athi River police officers.

Speaking during the occasion at Athi River Police Station, Mutua said majority of the security officers across the country do not have proper houses.

This, he said, compromised the country's security arguing some of them do not have peaceful nights in the structures provided for them by the state.

Mutua said although Athi River was better off in terms of housing, there was dire need to improve the houses available for the police due to rising numbers of the officers.

According to Mutua, Athi River Police Station has been in existence for long hence the need to have state of the art equipment and infrastructure given that it serves a large area. The station is the sub county police headquarters for Mavoko.

The governor noted that like other professionals, members of security forces should live descent livelihoods to effectively execute their daily mandate of protecting Kenyans.

Mutua said the county government had adopted a cheap and state of the art technology that would ensure the construction gets completed by end of August this year.

He encouraged police officers to continue working hard and develop good rapport with locals in a bid to reduce crime.
