A man from Kinoo was on Thursday arraigned before a Kikuyu court for allegedly assaulting his expectant wife while under the influence of alcohol.

Michael Kinuthia denied committing the offence before Chief Magistrate James Ogweno. The prosecution told the court that on July 15, 2015 at around 8 pm, Kinuthia came home drunk and found his wife Margaret Wairimu asleep since she had a severe headache.

The court heard that Kinuthia walked to the kitchen and found food that was prepared for him. He ordered his wife to wake up and serve him. However she asked him to understand her situation and serve himself. But Kinuthia started raising his voice in anger. For a few minutes, there was an exchange of words until he hit his wife with a cup that was on the table. He followed it with a kick on her tummy. Ms Wairimu screamed as she could not defend herself from her husband who was now hitting her on her face.

The court was told that neighbours came to the rescue of Wairimu and separated the two. Ms Wairimu then reported the matter at Kinoo Police Station. She was taken to Gitanga Medical Centre, a private hospital nearby where she was attended to. Police escorted by some neighbours who had accompanied the complainant arrested Kinuthia. Ms Wairimu experienced a miscarriage following serious bleeding.

The case was adjourned the case until August 5 when it will be heard. However, the magistrate ordered that the case be mentioned on July 29. Kinuthia was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail.
