A 40-year-old man was on Monday jailed for 18 months by a Kisumu court for being in possession of stolen goods.

Steven Ochieng was convicted by Kisumu chief magistrate Lucy Gitari for the offence he committed on August 14, last year.

During the hearing the court heard that Ochieng, a resident of Nyawitta in Kisumu, was arrested by police with two television sets that were stolen from an electronic shop in Kisumu.

Ochieng, who had denied committing the offence, told the court that he bought the items from an electronic goods dealer who operates in the area and he had no idea that they had been stolen.

He, however, could not produce receipts to show where he bought the television.

He was arrested following police investigation into a robbery incident that had occurred at an electronic shop in Kisumu. The culprits behind the robbery were arrested and the case in ongoing.

In her judgement, Gitari said that Ochieng’s failure to ask for a receipt was the main reason for his sentence because he did not show initiative to find out the origin of the goods.
