A man has been sentenced to six months in jail or a fine of Sh20,000 for being in the country illegally.

Appearing before Kiambu Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache on Tuesday, William Ramos Mukonyi, a Tanzanian, pleaded guilty to the charge of being in the country without proper documentation.

The magistrate ordered that he should be repatriated to his country after serving his sentence.

Giving the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Richard Makenzi, said the accused was arrested on Friday July 17, 2015 in Kiambu Town near the market centre during a routine patrol by area assistant chief and his administration police.

“The man who appeared drunk roused the suspicion of the patrol team and on interrogating him, they established that he was an alien who did not have any documents permitting him to be in the country,” said Makenzi.

He added that Mukonyi's explanation that he was visiting his uncle did not convince them and so he was arrested and handed over to Kiambu Police Station.
