A man escaped death narrowly on Thursday after a mob turned on him for allegedly trying to break into a house.

The man is alleged to have attempted to break into a house at Koinange Estate in Shaabab when was spotted by a group of traders in the area who raised alarm.

Irate residents turned on him beating him with planks of wood and electric cables. Despite the pleas for forgiveness from his father, the residents continued to beat him mercilessly.

“We cannot continue to harbour thieves in the area as they are the destroying everything we are working for,” said Elvis Macharia, a resident.

Macharia said the man was part of a mob that he says is attacking and robbing residents regularly in the area.

Priscilla Kinyanjui, another resident also claimed that several youth in the area were addicted to bhang, which she says influences them into committing criminal activities in the area.

“We have never heard serious issues of insecurity but currently there has been a lot of break-ins especially when people are out at work,” she added.

Area Nyumba Kumi Initiative chairman, Godfrey Kimani commended the residents for their vigilance.

“Thank you for alerting us in regards to the break in and this shows that the surveillance is very high," he added.

Police in the area had to use teargas to disperse the irate residents baying for his blood. He was later taken to the Kaptembwa police station
