The farmers who planted two weeks ago are afraid that their crops might dry up even before the first weeding since the rains are yet to come. They say they have experienced a similar situation before where they incurred huge losses in addition to lack of food.

In January this year, farmers from Maseno lost their crops after they dried up due to prolonged drought in the area.

“We are afraid that our crops might dry up again, the agony we went through nobody wishes for it to happen again," said Caren Otongo.

Farmers complained about the cost of planting are high and losing their crops for the second time in a row would drain them financially.

“I took time to raise the money for covering the planting and all am praying for right now is for the rains to fall because if the crops dry up that means I will not plant again due financial constraints," said Gertrude Omwake.

A spot check in the area revealed that almost all farmers had planted maize and beans and some had begun to whither due to lack of rainfall.

The farmers began planting two weeks ago after rain fell for two days. There has been no rain since.
