Athi River police boss Kizito Mutoro has cautioned Mavoko residents against conducting illegal demonstrations in the sub-county.
Addressing the press in his office on Monday, Mutoro said it is unlawful to conduct demonstrations without seeking permission from the police.
"I caution all the residents of Mavoko Sub-County to desist from organising, conducting or participating in illegal demonstrations. They should seek permission in case they have intentions to do so," said Mutoro.
Mutoro said it was not necessary for the locals to engage in protests or demonstrations over issues which could easily be solved by relevant government authorities.
He said the OCS is in charge of issuing legal permits allowing for public gatherings including peaceful demonstrations adding it is the citizen's constitutional mandate.
Mutoro however noted that demonstrations were not encouraged in the sub-county arguing they interfered with peaceful operations thus pose a threat to members of the public, their property and smooth operations of their day to day businesses.
He called on the residents with grievances to seek redress from alternative officers in case they feel uncertified with the officers which have handled their cases.
Mutoro spoke shortly after police officers intercepted a demonstration that had been organised by Mavoko Maendeleo ya Wanawake leadership protesting against the release of a rape suspect by Athi River Police officers.
Resident Nicholas Mutisia, dismissed the order arguing that the constitution allows for peaceful demonstrations without consultations of the police.
Mutisia said it was not easy for the officers to issue demonstration permits to those intending to show their lack of confidence towards the same police officers.
He said the members of the public should be allowed to demonstrate whenever they feel oppressed without intimidation by the police.
