Youth from Mavoko Sub-County have been urged to come out in numbers and plant trees across the region ahead of the expected El Nino rains.

Mavoko Sub-County youth leader Erick Ndunda said the youth were the majority group and therefore it would be of great impact if they engage in tree planting.

"We as the youth are the majority in terms of numbers. I therefore urge all youth from Mavoko Sub-County to make a point of planting at least ten trees within the sub-county," said Ndunda.

Addressing journalists in Athi River Town on Friday, Ndunda said the trees would help in reducing the effects of high rates of climate change in the region.

He argued that the El Nino rains would be a great opportunity for the residents, hence a motivation for them to utilise the rain water for their trees and crops.

“This is an opportunity to practice agribusiness on the semi-arid land in Mavoko and its environs. It is also a way of improving livelihoods and living standards through agriculture,” said Ndunda.

He encouraged the youth to also engage their siblings most of who were idling at home due to the ongoing national teachers strike to implement the tree planting and agribusiness projects.

Ndunda said the rain water should not be left to go to waste but tapped for crop and tree production.
