A local leader has promised to table a motion in Nakuru County Assembly to push for stiffer punishments to help fight the increasing cases of child abuse witnessed in the county in the recent past.

According to nominated MCA Esther Njeri Mengere, cases of sodomy, rape and other related abuses contrary to the children’s act were denying young children their fundamental rights.

Speaking in the wake of reports that a religious leader in Elburgon over the weekend was arrested on accusations of sexually abusing more than 10 boys aged between 5-13 on varied dates, the MCA noted that such men should rot in jail.

She rooted for hanging as the perfect punishment of the crime, arguing that being lenient to such men makes the society learn to live with them as if everything is normal.

“The laws pertaining the punishment meted on sodomy should be revised and include stiffer penalties like hanging,” an angry Njeri proposed.

The lawmaker took issue with the clergy saying that majority of them were taking advantage of the trust their followers had on them to misuse them wrongly.

“The church has been one of the safest places where we used to seek refuge since time immemorial, what happened in between the years? When did the rain start beating us?" she wondered.

The teacher who was arrested at the Kasarani slums is under police custody as investigations on the issue continue.
