Athi River Township Member of County Assembly, Michael Mutua has called on leaders of cooperative societies and Saccos in Machakos County to manage them well so as to gain public confidence.
Speaking in his office in Athi River Town on Tuesday, Mutua said majority of the residents had lost confidence in the organisations due to poor leadership and management systems.
"As the people's spokesman in Mavoko, I take this opportunity to call on leaders of all cooperative societies and Saccos in the entire Machakos County to practice good management to ensure objectives of the institutions are met," said Mutua.
Mutua said some of the leaders were not honest to the members who have invested a lot of money in the organisations in terms of savings, subscriptions and other contributions.
The MCA claimed some individuals who manage the institutions are corrupt hence misuse or divert the members savings to their own projects or personal accounts.
Mutua said this has made majority of the county residents especially from Athi River Town, which has the highest number of registered cooperative societies and Saccos in the county opt to save and trade with banks instead of cooperative societies and Saccos.
He however noted that the institutions if well managed, can help residents realise their investment dreams thereby improving their living standards and social status hence equally raising the county's economic growth.
