A bid to create exclusive drinking zones in Kiambu County has failed after Members of the County Assembly shot down a motion to establish alcohol free zones.
The motion filed by Ngewa ward MCA, Karungo wa Thang’wa had sought enactment of laws restricting the establishment of bars and the sales of consumption of alcohol.
The motion was defeated after 26 members’ voted against while 16 supported on Wednesday in Kiambu County insisting the young generation is at stake when consuming alcohol be it adulterated or pure.
Karungo said that Kiambu County is bigger than individuals and urged the county government to indulge in building the region as opposed to setting up Alcohol Free zones in Kiambu.
The Ngewa law maker expressed his concerns with increased number of deaths over consuming of second generation products saying the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta is against alcohol consumption and Kiambu County will not pass such a motion to introduce again the heinous act.
His sentiments were followed closely by Kalimoni ward MCA, Joel Waichere who insisted the county needed better roads and employment for the youths who spear head crime in the area.
The Kalimoni legislator said that setting up alcohol free zones in Kiambu will encourage crime in the area a cancer which has been terrorizing the county since youths indulge in crime to get the money for drinking purposes or drug and substance abuse.
“Lack of employment and drug abuse has been the reason for crime since youths have been indulging in the act thus if the motion would have gone through we would have started from the beginning again to stop adulterated products,” said Waichere
